Should anyone ever ask you for an example of perfect singing wedded to perfect expression, concentration, and fidelity to the text, you now have an example: Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's live (from Berkeley, California) 1995 recording of Berlioz' Les nuits d'йtй. Hunt Lieberson's reading is hypnotically beautiful, impeccably tuned and immensely moving. She never resorts to melodrama or overstatement. She seems to have an infinite number of dynamic shadings within piano and a tangible femininity. The sheer untroubled tone of "Villanelle" is so deeply contrasted with the darkness at the start of "Sur les lagunes" that it's almost shocking, and the repeated "Reviens, reviens, ma belle aimйe" during "L'Absence" are so intimate, so filled with longing, that the heart melts. The final song, again by contrast, is filled with girlish hope. The Handel arias from Cesare, Ottone, Radamisto, Arianna, and Agrippina, recorded in 1991 (same venue), are marvelous as well, ranging from the lamenting "Ombra cara" from Radamisto to Agrippina's coy "Ogni vento." Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque are stunning, although the recording favors the voice. Not a real complaint.
